Foods That Detoxify And Heal
HGV team member, Clinical Nutritionist, and co-formulator of ANU water, Arnel Lindgren, is adamant about getting as much of our nutritional supplementation from the food matrix itself, rather than from vitaminand supplement isolates.
The following list will continue to update with foods that can stimulate natural detoxifying effects and nourish cells for new growth and proper function.
Grapefruit is one of the best tonics for liver health. It is also known for helping to alleviate the Herxheimer reaction that can be associated with detoxing too quickly and experiencing either the unpleasant 'die-off' of pathogens or the releasing of a lot of toxins which can overload the lymph system.
In addition, grapefruit helps protect your cells from free radicals, which can cause significant cell damage.
Eat a grapefruit a day and keep the free radicals away.
Add 1 tablespoon of Olive oil to a glass of grapefurit juice and you have just made an excellent tonic for you liver and gall bladder!
Chlorella and Kelp are in the news lately, for their protective benefits from radiation poisoning.
However, long before the Japanese nuclear accident in March 2011, these foods have been at the top of nearly every list for both their detoxing properities as well as being rich in trace minerals.
From our notes, Dr. Staninger has specifically recommended Icelandic or Norwegian Kelp in her protocol for recovering from Morgellons. She says it will help stimulate hair growth, one of the devastating symptoms presented in this hyper toxic health condition.
"Kelp is a natural antidote to radiation poisoning as seen with plutonium, uranium, radon, I-131 and I-125. It was used as the primary antidote for the effects of radiation poisoning after the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima, Japan.", states Dr. Staninger.
Chlorella is effective in detoxing nuclear radiation, pesticide chemicals, PCB's, and heavy metals like mercury. It is rich in chlorophyll, nascent amino acids and nascent B-12. It aids in processing oxygen, eliminates mold, and promotes the growth and repair of tissues all of which aids in slowing cellular aging.
Chlorella also boosts the immune system through macrophage activity, normalizes blood sugar and blood pressure, and helps to alkalize and balance our pH.
Update: it is important to choose a sea vegetable that does not come from Japan and it's outlying areas, due to the radiation dispersing from the Fukushima Nuclear disaster.

Lemons and Limes can lower our pH thereby increasing our alkalinity and have more recently been nominated as the safe and non-toxic Cancer cell killer.
From a report in the US Library of Medicine and National Institute of Health, it states Limonoids have been shown to inhibit the growth of estrogen receptor-negative and -positive human breast cancer cells in culture.
Lemons and limes contain disease-fighting compounds known as limonoids. The human body is able to readily absorb a specific, long-acting limonoid known as limonin, according to the US Agricultural Research Service.
Both citrus fruits are also alive with the entire food matrix of Vitamin C and bioflavanoids to ensure our cells can utilize the full spectrum of anti-oxidant properties available in these fruits.
Great benefit comes from drinking a daily glass of water with 1/2 half of lemon squeezed in it.
(Note from Ramona: I have been rubbing the juice left on lemon wedge on my skin areas that have sun damage and on hands where I have age spots...these spots are diminishing very quickly!)
Adding Capiscum or cayenne pepper to the lemonade mix, will create a version of the very popular Master Cleanse Diet.
Cayenne Pepper, Capsicum
The first time we encountered using cayenne pepper as an alternative remedy was while managing the symptoms of Lyme disease.
Capsicum is often suggested for stomach troubles like cramps and diarrhea and for improving circulation to help both the heart and brain function under un-ideal situations.
It can help with headache symptoms due to poor blood flow and as a catalyst for helping other herbs. However, it is cautioned to used sparingly at first to ensure there are no strong reactions.
We recommend always taking the pill form about 30 minutes after a meal to help alleviate the strong effects it has on the stomach lining.
Topically, it can be used to alleviate nerve pain caused by shingles, fibro-myalgia, and both rheumatoid and osteoarthritis.
Some folks have discovered an allergy to these skin creams so be sure to test a small area first.
Coconut Oil
In Sanskrit, the coconut palm is known as kalpa vriksha, meaning "tree which gives all that is necessary for living"
When combined with a balanced diet of fresh foods, Coconut oil lowers cholesterol to 'normal' by promoting its conversion into pregnenolone.
Pregnenolone belongs to a group of neurosteroids found in high concentrations in certain areas of the brain. Neurosteroids affect synaptic function, are neuroprotective and enhance myelinization (the insulating sheath covering over nerves).
Since the 1930s, it has been clearly established that suppression of the thyroid will raise serum cholesterol (while increasing mortality from infections, cancer, and heart disease); therefore, restoring the thyroid hormone brings cholesterol down to normal.
By 1950, it was established that unsaturated fats suppress the metabolic rate, apparently creating hypothyroidism.
The exact mechanisms of that metabolic damage was studied and documented that unsaturated fats damage the mitochondria, partly by suppressing the respiratory enzyme, and partly by causing generalized oxidative damage.
The more unsaturated the oils are, the more specifically they suppress tissue response to the thyroid hormone.
Nearly all commercial seed and vegetable oils on the market today, are high in unsaturated fats.
In animal studies starting in the 40's, coconut oil proved to have anti-obesity effects and is the reason it is NOT used in commercial feeds, because it is literally too hard to fatten a cow or pig that is eating coconut oil!
Just as metabolism is "activated" by consumption of coconut oil, which prevents the inhibiting effect of unsaturated oils, other inhibited processes, such as clot removal and phagocytosis, will probably tend to be restored by continuing use of coconut oil.
Consequently, folks that have followed lowfat diets for as much as 11 years, create an inability to digest fats and can result in execma and problems of skin and hair.

Lotus tea (not really food, but so good for you we had to list!)
According to toxicologist, Dr. Staninger, Lotus tea will help flush many organs (eyes, digetive system, kidneys) of plastic materials that we are eating in our foods (because of storage and cooking in plastic) and plastic contamination from drinking bottled water.
Thanks to one of our readers, we have tracked down this website for Lotus Tea. Click Lotus Tea to find the source.
Probiotics and Prebiotics
In two recent NCCAM-funded studies, researchers investigated how probiotics may be used for treating gastrointestinal illnesses, boosting immunity, and preventing or slowing the development of certain types of cancer.
Probiotics are essential to our entire health system because they play a key role in creating the proper biological terrain (internal environment) for the building and nourishing of all cellular functions.
In today's stresses of poor quality diets, anti-biotics, heavily chlorinated water, plastics and GMOs in our foods, a daily dose of probiotics is essential to creating a healthy bio-terrain.
Prebiotic foods like Jerusalem Artichoke Flour are effective for help maintain the correct environment for the 'healthy bacteria' garden within the intestines.
Kombucha is also known to help support the beneficial flora.
Mushrooms have been in the Asian and Mediterranean diet for ages and about 700 mushrooms are known to have medicinal properties.
Even the popular 'white button' (agaricus bisporus) are showing results for reducing risk of breast and prostate cancer.
Dr. Chiba from the National Cancer Center presented his research at The Japanese Cancer Center. In his report, it was proved that polysaccharide of "Agaricus" activates the body's interferon production and has strong effect in preventing viral invasion.
The Agaricus species from Brazil (Agaricus Blazei) can be found as a tincture, or pill, and is one Dr. Staninger's favorites for detoxing the advanced nano materials that are one of our newest health threats.
Paul Stamets is doing some amazing research on the remediation properties of fungi on the environment, including contamination from diesel fuel and pesticides. Click here to read more about Mycoremediation.
Research shows that the polysaccharide beta-1,3-D-glucan in reishi boosts the immune system by raising the amount of macrophages T-cells, which has major implications for people suffering from AIDS and other immune system disorders.
Lion's Mane is known for supporting the brain, Shittake for stimulating the immune system, fighting infection, and demonstrating anti-tumor activity.
Dandelion is a powerful green that is a fantastic tonic for the liver.
Early in the spring when you can pick the tender leaves, saute them with garlic or add to your salad. The most common use is as a tea or tincture but we have discovered another great use for this prolific plant...it is highly effective on painful plantars warts.
Using a fresh leaf or tincture form, apply to the wart as often as you can during the day. If you do this consistently, within about 10 days, that wart will be gone.
Iodine as in the supplement for helping protect your thyroid from the radiation poisoning, is also a great remedy for fungal skin issues.
We have had great results using Iodine on a toe nail fungus, athlete's foot, and a small but pesky rash on the side of the nose.
Digestive Aids
Add 1 tablespoon of Organic Apple Cider Vinegar to a glass of organic Apple Juice, this is an excellent tonic to be used daily for the Liver/Gall Bladder.
Peppermint Oil taken 30 minutes to an hour before a meal will aid the Gall bladder in its vital function.
