Q: Why does ANU have a chlorine taste?

A: Both the ANU Professional Extra Strength (EX) and Daily Standard products contains hypochlorous acid (HClO).

This molecule is a combination of chlorine, oxygen and hydrogen.

It is intrinsic to the functioning of the immune system and our immune system actually produces it to kill pathogens.

Our cells also produce it as a by-product of the production of adenosine tri-phosphate, or ATP. ATP is commonly known as the energy molecule our bodies uses to store energy for metabolic processes and physiology.

Our cells do not regard this molecule as foreign as it is present throughout our cellular terrain and it's job is to help clean out pathogens and foreign invaders.

Also as reported by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, hypochlorous acid or HOCl, is known to play an important part in the killing of several bacterial and fungal strains.(1)

Q: Wiki says about HClO - It forms when chlorine dissolves in water.
This sounds alarming, how is this different from the HClO found in ANU?

A: The answer to this question gets a bit complicated as there are a few moving parts to inter-relate.

The first factor is pH, the second is ionization of HClO, the third is the presence of other ions.

When HClO is in an alkaline environment, it ionizes to become H+ and ClO-; in an acid or less than 7.0 pH environment, it reverts to HClO due to what is known as proton pressure. In our stomachs any alkaline Anu water will revert the ClO- to HClO instantly.

The chlorine in swimming pools, as well as common household bleaches, is actually a molecule known is NaClO or sodium hypochlorite. This is the real toxic stuff. When chlorine gas is bubbled into water as a type of water treatment, it causes an alkalinization of the water, so you never see HClO, just the hypochlorite ion, ClO-.

What makes Anu so unique is the 70+ minerals present, and the absence of the sodium, so the hypochlorous acid is pure.
